Three Areas to Drill Your Quarterback

There are three main areas of quarterback drills that need to be practiced on a regular basis in order to help develop the best quarterback possible.  These three areas must be drilled no matter what style of offense you are planning to use for your upcoming football season.

The three area are:

  1. Agility Drills
  2. Ball Handling Drills
  3. Passing Drills

Agility drills will be comprised of mostly footwork.  The quarterback’s footwork is one of the most important aspects, yet one of the most overlooked by most coaches. Footwork is also important on handoffs, fakes and running bootlegs.  It does not matter if you are using a drop back passing scheme or a rollout, it will need to be drilled.

Ball handling drills start with the quarterback center exchange.  Again it doesn’t matter if you are using a conventional quarterback center exchange, where the quarterback has his hands under the center, or a direct snap using the shotgun, both need to be heavily drilled.  Also during the ball handling stage, we will drill the quarterback on how to hang on to the ball and the proper tucking techniques used for handoffs and passing plays.

Lastly, we need to drill our quarterbacks for passing the football.  Most coaches only work on this area and this is a shame.  Your quarterback may have the best arm in the world, but if he does not know how to hang on to the ball, or drop back the proper way, he will not be as effective as he should be.
