Matt Forte not present at Bears voluntary workout

The message from Matt Forte; “Relax is called voluntary for a reason”.  How about that? Me first players like this have no place on my roster.

Amid the buzz associated with the new regime at Halas Hall, Bears running back Matt Forte was conspicuously absent Monday for the beginning of the voluntary offseason program. Coach John Fox assembled his team for the first time, but missing was the most consistent offensive performer the team has had dating to the midpoint of the Lovie Smith era. Sources said Forte let it be known he would not be in attendance.

Coach John Fox assembled his team for the first time, but missing was the most consistent offensive performer the team has had dating to the midpoint of the Lovie Smith era. Sources said Forte let it be known he would not be in attendance. The 29-year-old is entering the final year of his contract and has expressed a desire for an extension.

Forte announced via Twitter that he worked out at Bommarito’s, an athletic performance center in South Florida, and after the Tribune reported he was not present at Halas Hall, he took to the social media site again.

“Relax everybody,” Forte wrote. “It’s called voluntary W/O for a reason. I’ve always been there especially when it counts!”

The two-time Pro Bowl performer is due to earn $8.2 million this season, but $100,000 of that is tied to a workout bonus. Typically, the Bears require players to attend 85 percent of the voluntary offseason workouts to collect such a bonus. Not showing up is the only leverage Forte has in seeking an extension or perhaps a trade.

Only four running backs are scheduled to make more money than Forte this season — LeSean McCoy, Adrian Peterson, Marshawn Lynch and DeMarco Murray. McCoy, Lynch and Murray received new deals this offseason. Read more…
